NDIS Catheter Care
At True Living, we provide safe, respectful, and person-centred catheter care as part of our NDIS supports. Our approach is built on strong clinical governance, clear scope of practice, and a deep respect for individual dignity.
NDIS
catheter care
Catheter care can be safely supported by trained NDIS support workers under the guidance and oversight of a registered nurse.
Before assisting any participant with catheter needs, support workers complete specific catheter care training to ensure they deliver care confidently, safely, and in line with best practice.
Within their scope, support workers assist with routine catheter care, including emptying and measuring catheter bags, monitoring for changes, and supporting daily catheter maintenance. All care follows evidence-based procedures and is accurately documented using approved fluid balance charts. Support workers are trained to recognise early signs of concern and escalate issues promptly to a clinical nurse or appropriate medical professional.
Certain catheter-related tasks sit outside the support worker role. This includes catheter insertion or reinsertion, infection treatment, and clinical decision-making. These tasks are always managed by qualified health professionals to ensure participant safety and high-quality care.
Our catheter care resources are designed to provide clarity, consistency, and reassurance – supporting participants to receive the right care while living confidently and beyond limits.
Catheter Care Skills for Support Workers
This catheter care skills resource supports NDIS support workers to deliver catheter-related care that falls strictly within their scope of practice, while maintaining infection control, accuracy, and participant dignity.
The skills video demonstrates how to safely attach and change a catheter bag using ANTT principles, secure a leg bag using appropriate straps and devices, and connect an overnight drainage bag. It also covers best practice for emptying and measuring catheter output, maintaining infection prevention standards, and recording fluid balance accurately.
Clear documentation, regular monitoring, and timely communication are essential to quality catheter care. Support workers are expected to follow all training, clinical guidelines, and documentation requirements, and to seek guidance whenever needed.
If an issue arises, support workers should refer to the catheter troubleshooting guide to identify recommended actions. Any ongoing concerns or situations outside scope must be escalated to a manager or clinical nurse.
Through structured training, clear clinical oversight, and a strong focus on safety, True Living delivers NDIS catheter care that is reliable, respectful, and centred on the person – supporting everyday wellbeing and a life beyond limits.
